WIsconsin Gift Card Laws

Wisconsin Consumer Protection Laws

Wisconsin does not have any significant legislation relating to gift cards. Fortunately for consumers the federal CARD act mandates a minimum of 5 years for expiration dates and 1 year before any post sale fees may be assessed. These rules do not cover cards that are part of a promotional or loyalty program but cards in that program need to provide disclosure regarding any fees or expiration date.

Wisconsin provides less consumer protection than most states with regard to gift cards. We are disappointed by the lack of legislation on the state level, but are encouraged by the federal laws that provide basic protections for consumers. We hope Wisconsin will move forward with more comprehensive laws to protect consumers.

About Wisconsin

Wisconsin became part of the US on May 29, 1848. The Badger State is where the first hydroelectric plant was built and it is the dairy capital of the US, producing more milk than any other state. Wisconsin is the birthplace of famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, Harry Houdini, General Douglas MacArthur, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court William H Rehnquist, actor Don Ameche and the first Barbie doll. Harley Davidson motorcycles originated in Wisconsin as did ice cream sundaes.

Wisconsin produces a lot of cheese and so are sometimes referred to as "cheeseheads" (especially at sporting events) and will sometime wear foam rubber cheese head hats especially when cheering on the Green Bay Packers.

Cheesy Gift Ideas

You want a friend to experience some true Wisconsin culture. So maybe you provide gift cards for specific things like cheese or an ice cream sundae. Perhaps you want them to go see a Green bay Packers game or buy some nice Packers souvenirs, like a nice foam rubber cheese head hat. Gift cards can help direct the recipient to exactly what you want them to get or at least experience.

Gift Card Types

Some gift cards are specific to a merchant and others are more general purpose cards that can be used almost anywhere. You have to decide which is better. Many laws that provide protection for some cards will not affect others and as such some cards may involve extra recurring fees. Take a good look and compare before deciding which one is right both as a gift and for how much you want to spend.
