North Carolina has passed legislation affecting gift cards. They do not have any limits on expiration dates so fortunately the federal CARD law kicks in and provides a minimum expiration of 5 years. Post sale fees may be charged 1 year after purchase. Cards with an expiration date will escheat to the state after 3 years of inactivity.
The consumer protection offered by North Carolina is less than most states. We are encouraged by the federal CARD law for offering protection and hope that North Carolina will work on improving their laws to help protect consumers.

Gift A Memory
Perhaps instead of a gift card for merchandise you might think about getting one for use at a hotel or bed and breakfast. The challenge is to get one that is not restrictive as to dates and hopefully won't have an expiration date if possible. You will want to carefully check what the card will and will not cover and if there are any additional fees.
Gifts For Grandparents
Travelling to visit your children? Grandchildren? It used to be a hassle to find the right gifts and then fit them in the suitcase. Now it's easier to just get gift cards. A gift for one of the large "box" stores will usually cover all the bases. You can add the bonus of taking them to the store to let them pick out what they would like.
