Nebraska law has stated that any card with an expiration date will escheat to the state after 3 years of inactivity. The state offers no limits on expiration dates or post-sale fees. Fortunately the Federal CARD law provides consumers with some protection. Under the Federal law any expiration dates have a 5 year minimum and no after sale charges unless the card has not been used for more than one year.
Nebraska has less legislation relating to gift card user consumer protection than most states. We are encouraged by the Federal laws that have been passed and hope that Nebraska will work to improve their consumer protection laws.
Nebraska became the 37th state of the US March 1, 1867. Kool Aid was invented in Nebraska in 1927, which helps wash down the Reuben sandwich, also invented there. Nebraska is the "Cornhusker state" and is a big producer of corn in the US.

Do You Know The Laws?
Many states have bizarre laws that are still on the books, although not really enforced. An excellent example is in Blue Hill, Nebraska, where no female wearing a 'hat that would scare a timid person' can be seen eating onions in public. The Cornhusker state seems to have a thing about onions because in Waterloo, barbers are forbidden from eating onions between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. The point here is that laws change and some are strictly enforced and others are not. When you are looking to purchase or redeem a gift card, a quick search online can tell you what the current laws are.
Out Of The Ordinary
For years gift shoppers have sought out that special gift for someone. Now, as gift cards become more in demand and more popular you might seek out a more unique type of card. Perhaps someone has always wanted to go white water rafting, or skiing or paragliding. Perhaps they can't afford it or are hesitant. A gift card may be just the thing to spur them into action to "seize the day."
