If you have trouble not spending too much when you enter the doors of TJ Maxx, their credit cards may not make things better.

However, if you are a frequent shopper in one of the over 1,000 TJ Maxx U.S. locations, or the other affiliated stores owned by its parent The TJX Companies, Inc. — Marshalls, HomeGoods or Sierra Trading Post — you can collect 5 times more points by using a TJX credit card than from enrolling in the free Rewards Program.

Be warned.

There are downsides to applying for these credit cards and it has more to do with their issuing bank, Synchrony Financial, than with TJ Maxx stores themselves.

Two Types of TJX Rewards Cards

TJ Maxxoffers two credit cards: TJX Rewards Credit Card and TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard.

When you are approved for either of these cards, you receive a 10% discount bonus to be used within 30 days.

TJX Rewards Credit Card

The TJX Rewards Credit Card is strictly for purchasing products online or in-store at TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, Marshalls and Sierra Trading Post.

TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard

TheTJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard works like just like Mastercard and can be used for purchases anywhere.

Growth & Forecast of TJ Maxx Fashion Sales from 2011-2020

Who are the cards best for?

Both cards are targeted to those who enjoy shopping at TJX stores, and that is a lot of people.

TJ Maxx is a very popular shopping destination offering a wide-range of merchandise priced 20%-60% less than department stores.

They buy from worldwide manufacturers to present a variety of on-trend fashions and home products.

And it is not just TJ Maxx — The TJX Companies, Inc. is the most popular off-price retailer in the world.

At the end of the 2016 fiscal year, they boasted $33.2 billion in sales and has stores in Canada, Australia, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Poland and the U.K.

The biggest benefit of having a TJX Rewards Credit Card or a TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard is to those who regularly shop at TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, Marshalls or Sierra Trading Post and want to accumulate 5x more points by using these cards than by using a Rewards Access Card alone.

What bank are the cards issued through?

TJX Credit Cards are issued through Synchrony Financial — the U.S. leader in private label credit cards boasting 71 million customer accounts.

The TJ Maxx website's credit card holder portal to apply or manage your account is hosted by Synchrony Bank.

What are the interest rates on the cards?

The Annual Percentage Rate (APR) is the same for both cards: 27.74%.

That is an extremely high interest rate, so if you think you cannot pay off your balance every month, realize you will be paying a lot more for your purchases using these cards and it may not make the TJX Rewards points worth it.

The TJX Rewards Platinum Mastercard offers cash advances for 29.99% APR and, just so we get the math straight … that is almost $30 more for every $100.

That doesn't include the cash advance transaction fee of $10 or 4% of the amount, whichever is greater, so that is like $40 for every $100 you take out of the ATM.

Just don't do it.

CreditLoan recommends other options if you need a card that offers way better rates on cash advances.

What are the credit limits on the cards?

Credit limits are assigned by Synchrony Financial based on creditworthiness and are subject to increases or decreases at their discretion, but they do not provide limits over $10,000.

Consumers Who Have Shopped at TJ Maxx from 2008-2017

Customer Reviews

There aren't many satisfied customers who have reviewed this card.

They all seem to love shopping at TJ Maxx, but dislike dealing with Synchrony Financial for their accounts.

There were complaints about Synchrony's customer service, high interest rates, unanswered questions about credit limits and mystifying charges on the cards.

There were also lots of anecdotal stores of 10-15 days processing time for larger payments leading to a late fees.

There are many truths about how credit cards work, but the poor customer service seemed to be the part that pushed most card holders over the edge.

  • Will my card be closed if I do not use it overtime?

All credit card companies have the option to cancel your card if you do not use it, and this is especially true of store brand cards. The reason is that they make no money off of your having the card if you don't use it. They can cancel your card and are not required to provide you with a reason.

  • Why has my credit limit been lowered right after I have made a large payment?

Synchrony Bank, like any credit card issuer, can raise or lower your credit limit for any reason. Since the recession, banks use a practice called chasing the balance which means they will lower your credit limit after you have paid down or off your balance to protect themselves against default. Unfortunately, this can affect your credit score because it can appear your card is maxed out.

Our Verdict

There are much better options with lower interest rates and rewards than either of these credit cards.

Even if you love the stores, explore other credit cards that provide higher cash back rewards and use that money to shop at TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, Marshalls and Sierra Trading Post.

The whole idea behind a store like TJ Maxx is to save money with great discounts, so why wouldn't you choose a better card to get more bang for your buck?
