Store-brand credit cards might seem limited in their versatility.

After all, rewards are restricted to that specific store and the card's usefulness diminishes.

Or does it?

Store credit cards are usually easier to qualify for, which helps you establish a credit history if you didn't already have one.

There are also a number of perks that come with the card, so if you are a frequent Lowe's shopper, applying for their in-store credit card can be an excellent idea.

How many types of credit cards does Lowe's offer?

Lowe's offers two types of credit cards:

The Lowe's Consumer Credit Card and the Lowe's Business Rewards Card. The names are self-explanatory; one is for everyday consumers and weekend warriors, while the other cards are aimed at businesses.

While you may benefit significantly from the Lowe's Consumer Card when performing a large-scale home renovation, someone who owns a home improvement company and routinely spends hundreds of dollars at Lowe's would benefit most from the business cards.

Contractors, painters, plumbers, and other handymen types that rely on Lowe's for the supplies they need can benefit from the rewards.

Lowe's Store Worldwide from 2004-2016

The Lowe's Consumer Card offers 5 percent off eligible purchases, and charges no interest on purchases of $299 or more if paid within six months.

On the other hand, Lowe's business credit cards can be beneficial to those that own larger companies.

There are three to choose from: the Lowe's Business Account, Lowe's Accounts Receivable, and the Lowe's Business Rewards Card from American Express.

All three business accounts offer 5 percent off everyday purchases at Lowe's, as well as easy to understand statements and low monthly payments.

There is also no annual fee for any of the three cards.

The true rewards come into play only with the Business Rewards Card from American Express: 3x points at restaurants and office supply stores in the US, as well as on wireless telephone services purchased directly from US service providers; 2x points at Lowe's; 1x points on all other purchases.

You can redeem these points for Lowe's Gift Cards and American Express gift cards.

Who are the targeted consumers of the card? Which group benefits the most from getting the card?

The target consumers for the Lowe's Consumer Card are first-time homeowners with a fixer-upper.

The sheer cost that goes into fixing up a home can be overwhelming.

But the Lowe's Consumer Card gives you 10 percent off the first purchase and 5 percent off all purchases. This can help keep those costs low.

Plus, the 0 percent APR for six months deal can save a fortune on interest charges if you're able to pay it off in time.

Those with less than perfect credit can benefit hugely from this.

The Lowe's Business Rewards Card is better suited for those with mid-to-large sized companies that spend thousands, if not tens of thousands per month on business related expenses.

Even expenses like client dinners count for 3x points, and these points can be redeemed for Lowe's gift cards to offset the cost of supplies.

What bank is the card issued through?

All Lowe's credit cards are issued through Synchrony Bank, one of the largest issues of retail credit cards in the country.

What are the interest rates on the two cards?

The standard APR for the Lowe's Consumer Credit Card is 26.99 percent.

The standard APR for the Lowe's Business Rewards Card is 13.99 percent, 15.99 percent, or 18.99 percent based on your creditworthiness.

The bright side of both cards is the lack of annual fee.

Neither the Lowe's Consumer Credit Card or the Lowe's Business Rewards Card has an annual fee.

Does Lowe's have a rewards program?

The main rewards program is found in the Lowe's Business Rewards Credit Card. The breakdown looks like this:

  • 3x points at restaurants, office supply stores, and wireless telephone services purchased directly from US service providers
  • 2x points at Lowe's
  • 1x points on other purchases

The points can be redeemed for $25 Lowe's Gift Cards, Gas Rewards Cards, and Outdoor Rewards Card at 2,500 points, and $25 American Express Gift Cards at 3,500 points.

How do you apply for a Lowe's Credit card?

To apply for a Lowe's credit card, either business or consumer, start from the Lowe'sCredit Center.

From there, select either the Consumer Credit Card application or the Business Credit Card application.

The consumer card application begins there, but from the business credit card application page you must choose either the Lowe's Business Account card, the Lowe's Accounts Receivable card, or the Lowe's Business Reward Card from American Express.

Once you've made your decision, you'll fill out the application as normal.

The first step of the Consumer Credit application is to choose the style of your card.

You have two options: a blue and a black card.

The next step is to enter the valid information. This includes:

  • Street address
  • Zip code
  • City and state

While the exact minimum requirements aren't known, most store cards have much lower credit requirements than traditional credit cards.

The Consumer Credit Card will likely be easier to qualify for than one from Capital One or American Express.

What are the customer reviews on this card?

Sometimes finding out what others have to say about a credit card can tell you everything you need to know about it.

Here are a few of the reviews we've found with regards to the Lowe's card, both positive and negative from Credit Karma.

"Initial limit of $500. After no lates, low util., and perseverance, I am now at $8,500. I've noticed they give much larger CLI after you've been with them a year or so. I rarely use this card and barely like Lowe's. You get a 5% discount on everything! Whenever I have a home to remodel, I am sure this card will be taken advantage of; they are always offering some time of 0% for 6 mo or so. Plus the love button every three months or so. I do it a lot as they are only soft inquiries, which do not reflect poorly as they are an existing creditor on your CR."

-gsies613, Jan 21, 2012

"The main issue is they start you with a low limit like 600-800 mins was an 800 with my score of 720 they said keep it under 30% and pay it off and it will shoot up to 2500-3500 lie! Paid it off twice now and all they do is restart me back at 800.00 !!! Never missed a payment or late on a payment, so the main issue seems to be sync banking, not Lowes. However, Lowes should change and help the customers get a banking card to increase as they work hard to pay it off in full. Also paying your bill is a hassle sometimes as they don't accept some payments and charge fees and need lots info for the phone payments short story it's not quick."
