The Verdict

Bealls isn't a one-stop destination like retail giants Target and Walmart, but the store is a favorite of many Florida residents who enjoy their range of clothing, shoes, and household goods.

If you're one of those Floridians who shop at Bealls often, you may be considering its credit card to take advantage of the many rewards offered.

Bealls Florida card is good for loyal shoppers looking to rebuild credit responsibly.

But while store credit cards can be a very good way to establish a credit history and build up your credit score, they often come with a punishingly high APR — and the Bealls Florida credit card, issued by Comenity Bank, is no exception.

Frequent shoppers may find value with the Bealls Florida credit card by pairing it with the Coast2Coast Rewards program.

But unless you want to rebuild your credit and you also plan on paying off the balance in full every month to avoid the interest rate, you may be better off using another kind of rewards card for your Bealls purchases.

Still, the Bealls Florida credit card is best for dyed-in-the-wool Bealls customers who are looking to build or rebuild their credit.

The Competition

You can simply use a cash-back card like the Amex EveryDay credit card or the Discover it on your Bealls purchases and let your purchase points pile up across retailers and transactions.

But store credit cards should be compared to other store credit cards, so how does the Bealls Florida credit card stack up against, say, Kohl's, arguably their biggest brick-and-mortar competitor?

The Question Everyone Is Asking

The Bealls Florida Credit Card can be good for frequent shoppers who are able to pay the balance in full to avoid the high APR.

But accessing the bulk of the advantages requires enrolling in the Bealls Coast2Coast Rewards program, which is separate than the Bealls Florida credit card.

To take full advantage of all the rewards and benefits Bealls offers, you'll have to jump through a hoop or three.

Creating and linking your accounts. You'll need to sign up for the Coast2Coast Rewards program, which can be done online at any time whether you have a card or not.

You'll have to register your account online with your name, email, address, and phone number, as well as set up a security question.

While you don't need a Bealls Florida credit card to enroll into this program, the card can definitely maximize the benefits. Your Rewards ID will be your 10-digit phone number.

Spending and getting your points. After you enroll into the Coast2Coast Rewards program, you'll get 2 points for every dollar you spend with your Bealls Florida credit card, as opposed to just 1 point per dollar with any other form of payment.

For every 200 points you accumulate, you'll earn a $5 reward, and you can earn up to $50 in rewards every month. That means for every $100 you spend, you'll earn $5 in rewards, which is essentially a 5% discount on your total purchase.

The Strengths

The Bealls Florida card's biggest strength is the rewards offered to dedicated and loyal Bealls customers.

There's no doubt that the Bealls Florida credit card gives its customers lots of opportunities to earn savings on top of more savings.

the average american's savings account

All the benefits from the Coast2Coast Rewards programs can be combined with coupons, sales, discounts, special offers, and other exclusive cardholder perks.

In addition to Coast2Coast Rewards, those perks include:

Gold Customer status upgrade. Plan on spending more than $500 a year at Bealls Florida stores? You'll become a Gold cardmember, which will get you free shipping online.

Double points to double your rewards. You'll get a single point for every buck you spend on your Coast2Coast Reward membership, but Bealls Florida credit cardholders will get two points.

Additional opportunities to earn more. You'll be able to use Bealls Florida's generous coupons and deeply discounted sales along with your rewards and credit card to maximize savings. You'll also get a bonus during your birthday month.

The Weaknesses

A sky-high APR and lack of coverage make this store card more limited than most.

Store credit cards are almost always restricted to a range of services and offerings, and as a regional brand, the Bealls Florida credit card has more than its share of drawbacks.

There are Macy's and Kohl's all over the country and you can use your Walmart credit card at Sam's Club, but Bealls Florida credit cards are limited to, well, Florida.

Killer interest and fees can do serious damage. The APR is a fat 25.99%, which is high even by store credit card standards for those with bad credit.

If you open an account to rebuild your credit score, one missed payment will tack on a $27 late fee and set you back months.

To avoid this damage, make sure you pay your balance off in full each month.

Furthermore, the card won't work at Bealls in states other than Florida, Georgia, or Arizona, as those (like the ones in Texas) are actually owned by a separate nonaffiliated entity.

Who the Card Is Best For

You should get this card if you love Bealls and you want to rehab your bad credit.

If you enjoy the selections that Bealls offers for clothing and home items and you're looking for an easily-approved store credit card to help establish a credit history and raise your credit score, then the Bealls Florida credit card may be useful to you.

Of course, again, with the insane APR, you'll need to always pay the balance every month to get the full benefits.

The Card and the Company's History

Though Bealls is not a brand with nationwide recognition, it's been a household name in Florida for over 100 years.

But the Bealls name can be confusing to consumers when it overlaps with other entities with the same name.

When you're doing your homework on the Bealls Florida credit card, keep in mind that there are no less than three Bealls brands that shouldn't be confused or conflated.

Bealls Outlet stores. Though the outlet stores are related to the retail stores, the Bealls Florida credit card is not accepted at Bealls Outlet stores.

There are locations in Florida, Arizona, and Georgia, but they are located in 13 other states as Burkes Outlet, to avoid confusion with Bealls Texas.

Bealls Texas. This group is not affiliated with Bealls Florida and Bealls Outlet. It's among the portfolio of department stores owned by Stage Stores Inc. Stage offers its own credit card that includes their Bealls Texas brand, and shouldn't be confused with Bealls Florida.

Bealls Florida retail locations. There are more than 70 retail locations and they're all in Florida. Other than the website, this is the only place Bealls Florida credit cards are accepted.

Check out the store locator to see if a Bealls store is in your neighborhood.

How the Card Works

Hopefully, you've signed up for the Coast2Coast Rewards by the time you've applied for the card.

Enrolling in the program will enhance the benefits and discounts Bealls Florida offers, but beyond that, here are a few other features of the card:

Bare bones benefits, but can be combined with other rewards. There's no annual fee and of course, no foreign transaction fees, but cardmembers can get free shipping on online orders once they've been upgraded to Gold Customer status.

Beware of insanely high APR. The APR is 25.99%, which is higher than almost any store card we've seen. It's never a good idea to carry a balance on your card, but you'll definitely be punished for not paying off your balance each month.

Your monthly minimum payment will be $27 or the total balance if you owe less than that. Any interest that's charged will be no less than $1 even if the actual interest owed based on the APR is lower.

Probationary period after being late. Late payments come with a $27 fee the first time you're late. If you're late again within 6 months, it can run you up to $38. You'll also be charged $25 if any payment is returned.

And should your card get lost or stolen, you are not protected for any unauthorized use that may occur before you notify them. However, your liability won't be more than $50.

credit card fraud complaints

Big names headline brand exclusion list. If you enjoy shopping at Bealls Department Stores because they offer brands like Nike, Columbia, Under Armour, and Levi's, know that those labels and others are excluded from in-store offers like 15% off on your first-day purchase.

However, the brand exclusion does not apply to Coast2Coast Rewards.

What People Love About It

As a brand that's been entrenched in the region for over a century, Bealls has a pretty loyal following in Florida. Many people love the clothing choices, the consistent coupon offerings, and the experience of shopping there.

Credit card enhanced shopping experience. For a store card with a high APR, the Bealls Florida credit card gets plenty of love.

Social media alerts you to more savings.

Looking online for coupons, signing up for their email list, and following their Facebook and Twitter accountscan yield more discounts.

Rewards program makes shopping even more rewarding. Kelly Tyko, the Bargainista at TCPalm, says that the "Bealls' new Coast2Coast Rewards program is for everyone."

She reminds us that anyone not taking advantage of rewards programs from retailers is missing out, even if you don't shop there often.

Biggest Consumer Complaints

Financial experts agree store credit cards have many pitfalls.

As a store credit card, consumers seem to be aware and accepting of the limitations of the Bealls Florida credit card, APR warts and all.

But financial gurus are quick to point out how store credit cards, in general, may not be helpful at all.

Lackluster benefits package. Our friends at Credit Panda point out that the rewards on the Bealls Florida credit card don't have as much variety as similar cards do. Walmart, Costco, and BJ's, for example, offer gas points on their store credit cards.

Carrying a balance isn't rewarding. Opening a store credit card that you're unable to pay off in full every month is counter-productive. The APR is far too high to keep a balance, so you have to keep your balance paid off.

Key Digital Services

The Bealls Florida online shopping experience leaves a lot to be desired.

If you're familiar with the reliability of shopping online through Amazon or Walmart, you may be disappointed with

who checks online reviews before buying

Bad inventory management impacts orders. Reviews report that items appear to be shipped from whatever location has the item in stock.

This can create problems where inventory can be misplaced or labeled inaccurately and lead to unfulfilled and canceled orders.

Unfortunately, this appears like a common problem with Bealls.

why digital shoppers abandon their carts

Inconsistencies between what you see and what you get. Customers report getting different colors and models of what they saw online.

Even worse, some people have noticed the pricing can be inconsistent.

Returning items is a pain. Whether you pay out of your own pocket to ship items back or you have to go into a Bealls Florida location to return something, it's not fun to take time out of your day to wait for customer service, especially when it's their mistake.

How to Sign-up for the Card

Decide whether you want to apply online or in-store.

Both are eligible for an additional 15% off purchases made on the first day.

But true bargain hunters may want to scout local locations for sales and clearances for extra savings.

This is a card where you may want to apply in-store, as store credit cards often have special deals that incentivize customers to visit in-person.

Don't be discouraged by bad credit. With modest credit lines and high APRs, store credit cards allow issuers to take on a bit more risk with consumers, which means you don't need a great credit history to be approved for the Bealls Florida credit card.

Even those with poor and fair credit by FICO and VantageScore standards can get a store credit card.

Applying at Bealls Florida locations. Simply talk to a sales associate about applying for a store credit card.

You'll be directed to fill out an application, so make sure you have ID with you. You should know within minutes if you're accepted.

How to apply online. If you do go online to apply, make sure you're prepared to give your full name, social security number, date of birth, your annual income, and contact information that includes your mailing address, email address, mobile and alternate phone numbers.

You'll know in a few minutes whether you're approved or not.

Using your account online. Once you're approved and set up, you can use your account online to make payments, check your balance, transactions, and statements, and manage your Coast2Coast Rewards.

But if you want a credit line increase, you'll have to call the customer service line at 1-866-907-5594.

How to Close Your Account

Unfortunately, there is no very easy way to close your Bealls Florida credit card, at least not as easy as you'd probably like.

You can try sending them a message after signing into the website, but the best way to completely close your credit card account is to call the Customer Care line at 1-866-907-5594.
