Measuring the National Misery Over the Last 60 Years

The misery index was created by economist Arthur Okun. It is found by adding the inflation rate to the unemployment rate to give an overall indication of the state of the economy. It is based on the assumption that high levels of each will lead to both social and economic problems at a national level. The national misery index has been broken down into the party controlling congress at the time.

From 1949 to 1950, the national misery index was 10.23 under a Democratic congress. From 1951 to 1952, the national misery index was 3.45 under a Democratic congress. From 1943 to 1954, the national misery index was 4.26 under a Republican congress. From 1945 to 1956, the national misery index was 7.19 under a Democratic congress. From 1957 to 1958, the national misery index was 7.96 under a Democratic congress. From 1959 to 1960, the national misery index was 7.96 under a Democratic congress.

From 1961 to 1962, the national misery index was 6.83 under a Democratic congress. From 1963 to 1964, the national misery index was 5.97 under a Democratic congress. From 1965 to 1966, the national misery index was 7.26 under a Democratic congress. From 1967 to 1968, the national misery index was 8.12 under a Democratic congress. From 1969 to 1970, the national misery index was 11.67 under a Democratic congress.

From 1971 to 1972, the national misery index was 8.61 under a Democratic congress. From 1973 to 1974, the national misery index was 19.54 under a Democratic congress. From 1975 to 1976, the national misery index was 12.66 under a Democratic congress. From 1977 to 1978, the national misery index was 15.02 under a Democratic congress. From 1979 to 1980, the national misery index was 19.72 under a Democratic congress.
