Reputable and honest services do not make lofty claims and their ads will not mislead you. Debt consolidation services basically negotiate with your creditors to get the best deal for you in reducing your overall debt. However, they only work for reducing your unsecured debts and they do not work with your mortgage company, your car loan, or any other creditor that has some sort of security underwriting the debt, nor do they work with utilities or taxes. Moreover, even in the case of unsecured debts, even the best debt consolidation services firms can only manage to get a maximum of about 40% reduction in your unsecured debt as against the normal claims of 60% as mentioned in the ads. Debt consolidation services do become successful in consolidating your payments, but this is true only for your unsecured loans such as your credit card bills and personal loans. Their claims in the ads that they can bring down the payments to a very low level should be viewed in relation to what you are paying for your credit cards at the moment but it may not be the "low" level that you may have been given to believe. Their ads also claim that the harassing and threatening calls will stop and that they can rebuild your credit history after getting you out of debt in a fraction of the time that it would have taken otherwise. Most probably, the calls will stop after some time and even the payoff time will most likely come down, if you consider that it would have taken you nearly 20 to 30 years if you had dealt with it on your own. With the help of debt consolidation services, it will still take you between 3 and 7 years to pay off all your debts. Regarding their claim of rebuilding your credit history, you should realize that this can only be done by you through timely and consistent payment of your monthly payments. To select the appropriate debt consolidation services you should ensure that the program(s) they offer will work for you, both now and in the future, since you will be with them for quite a while and you should restrict your search to those debt consolidation services that are accredited by the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies or the National Foundation for Credit Counseling as they are more likely to provide the kind of services that you need. |
