Stay Out Of Credit Repair Clinic Periphery |
|
It is always a better idea to do your credit repair on your own, rather than hire the services of a dubious credit repair agency. There is nothing that a credit organization can do that you cannot do on your own. One must have come across countless ads credit repair agencies making all claims about converting your bad credit into a perfect one. It is quite easy to fall for their bombastic claims especially if you are suffering from a case of bad credit. You can afford to believe in them at your own peril. Don't just jump at their credit repair offer to be able to buy that swanky car. If you feel the need for a credit repair company, you need to be very selective about your company. It is not uncommon for these credit repair companies to employ illegal practices. In fact there have been cases where some credit companies have stolen the credit files and social security numbers of underage consumers of those living in far out places like Guam or the Virgin Islands and replacing the files of their clients with bad credit reports with them. They have even resorted to breaking into credit bureau systems to change or erase the files of their clients. And they call this entire procedure: credit repair! Doing illegal things is not the only problem with these credit repair companies. Even if a company is legitimate, it cannot really help you all that much. At least it's not worth shelling out all those dollars. They would charge you thousands of dollars for something you can do yourself for free. And if they claim to accomplish anything substantial, they are most likely lying. They promise to remove any incorrect information from your credit report. But the Fair Credit Reporting Act allows you to do that on your own. If the negative information on your credit report is accurate, there is no way anyone can remove it. What the credit repair agencies do is to manipulate the law in such a way as to perform a temporary vanishing trick on the negative items. The law normally requires that all the negative items be temporarily deleted from your credit report during dispute until their veracity is established. So, the agencies dispute left, right and center, to put pressure on the credit bureau to delete these items. But once you have paid your credit repair clinic off, these items would resurface on your credit report, unless they are proven inaccurate or obsolete. Usually the correct information reappears after a space of 30 to 60 days. It happens when the information is re-reported by the creditor who first reported it. Credit bureaus are now very much aware of these tactics of the credit repair clinics. The Fair Credit Reporting Act allows them to summarily reject such bogus disputations on the ground of frivolity. It is a much better option to go through your credit report on your own to detect any inaccurate negative information and put up a selective disputation. Subsequently an investigation would ensue to check the veracity of the negative information. Until then the disputed items would not be displayed on your credit report. And the best part is that you are not charged for this investigation. Usually the credit repair clinics make a deal with the debtors whereby they promise to pay any outstanding debts in return for the removal of the negative information from the credit file. But you can negotiate on your own. At least, your effort would be more genuine and less expensive. Many people can tell you from their experience, and the FTC will vouch for it, that the credit repair clinics do precious little for your credit. And you incur additional risk by paying them any upfront fees, especially if the agency is not the right one, as they might do a vanishing trick on you. The credit repair clinic might supply you with a list of banks that offer secured credit cards. With a little effort you can procure this information yourself for free. No point paying thousands of dollars for this piece of information. |
