Personal Credit Report Is Free, But Not Easy to Get

Do you know the importance of personal credit report in accessing a loan? A personal credit report is a picture of how you have paid back the companies from whom you borrowed money or how you have met other financial obligations. Your personal credit report, sometimes referred to as your credit history or credit file, contains personal information gathered from many sources on an ongoing basis and shows how much you are eligible for a loan.

You should keep checking your personal credit report and credit score on a regular basis. But the average American does not usually feel the importance of periodically checking his or her credit report and credit score. Most come to know about the significance of a personal credit report and score only after being turned down for credit.

Financially speaking, you need to know about the status of your personal credit report and credit score before you apply for a loan to buy a house or a car or anything else. Today, you can take full advantage of checking your personal credit report for free. The three major credit-reporting agencies, namely, Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion, offer a copy of your credit report for free.

To get a free copy of your personal credit report, contact any of the agencies directly or online. When they come to know about your requirement, they would take necessary steps to give you a copy of your personal credit report.
But remember, in your process to get a personal credit report, you may have to wade through dense, sometimes confusing detail on your credit history. Even several cases have come to light where consumers' personal credit report ran into technical problem that prevented them from getting their credit report online.

Another factor that may be of greater trouble in accessing your loan is your credit score. Generally, your credit score is mentioned in your personal credit report. If your credit score is high there is greater chance of being qualified for additional credit or the loan that you need for that new house or car. But if your credit score is not satisfactory, you might be simply denied from a loan. Therefore, even if your credit report comes for free, be equipped to face harsh situation if your credit score is an obstacle to your loan.

The FTC says that it's getting almost 1000 personal credit report complaints since the operation went onto air. According to their report, many customers got error messages and automatic timeouts when they tried to access an overloaded online system. A spokeswoman of The Seattle office of the state attorney general says that it has received five to eight calls a week since the personal credit report became available.

Although the application process for personal credit report comes free, major threat comes from the involvement of a third party. You will find many agencies that assure you that they would help you in getting your personal credit report. In fact they work like a middleman between you and the credit-reporting agency. But they may ask for fees for their service. Therefore, don't believe such an agency. Contact the credit-reporting agency directly or online through reliable sites. Or you can call toll-free or order by mail, and the personal credit report will be sent to you within 15 days.

If you are trying to see your personal credit report through the Internet, you should be very careful. Most consumers have reported that the online system crashed when they were trying to see their personal credit reports. Some of them even came up with complaints like when they tried again later, they got a message saying they already had gotten their free credit reports and thus wouldn't be eligible again for 12 months.

Therefore, to see your personal credit report online, it's better to type the address directly into your Internet browser instead of clicking on a link from another site.
