The Easiest Ways to Save Extra Money

Share

A lot of people are spending way too much money on their bills. Here’s a few simple things to look at that could save you a pretty penny in the long run.

In today’s economy, we’re all looking to save money. Fortunately, most families can save a significant amount of money each year simply by taking a closer look at their monthly bills, doing a bit of online shopping and replacing their light bulbs.

Best of all, these steps won’t change the way that families live their lives.

The truth is, most families are spending far more each year than they should on their insurance, cable service, telephone service and utilities. Most families also haven’t even tried to lower these costs in the last year or longer.

This is unfortunate, because families can save hundreds of dollars every year by following some simple strategies.

For instance, consider the monthly bills that plague all families. There are ways in which families can slash these costs.

They can start by writing in a notebook, or on a computer spreadsheet, the average amount of each of their monthly bills. Families should include those bills that they only pay on an annual or every-six-months basis, too, such as auto insurance and life insurance.

Families should take a close look at each of these bills. Can they somehow reduce how much they spend on each of these bills each month? For instance, by installing high-efficiency light bulbs, families can reduce their electric bills. By turning the temperature up on their thermostat during the summer, they can reduce the cost of cooling their homes.

Next, families should take a hard look at their bills and decide which services they can live without. Families, for example, can save hundreds of dollars a year by dropping their cable service or by moving to a more basic version of it. They might be able to save even more dollars by eliminating a lawn-maintenance service. If they have older kids, families can have their teens mow their lawns for free.

Finally, families should decide if there are certain services that they can get for less money from other providers. They might be able to reduce their monthly Internet bill by switching to a new online-services company.

The savings from these decisions can add up. Families might only be eliminating $5, $10 or $20 in expenses at a time. But those who create enough of these micro-savings can end up with big savings on a monthly or annual basis.

After looking at their monthly bills, families next need to inspect their utility bills. Energy Star reports that the typical family spends about $2,200 a year in utility bills. Many families spend even more.

To cut down on this cost, families should start by hiring a professional to perform an energy audit of their house. This audit will tell families exactly why their energy bills are as high as they are. The audits will also provide recommendations for ways in which families can reduce their utility bills.

Families who want to spend less heating and cooling their homes can buy a programmable thermostat. These handy devices can save families up to 20 percent a year on heating and cooling bills, Energy Star reports. This means that these thermostats pay for themselves rather quickly.

By replacing inefficient incandescent light bulbs with CFL bulbs, families can further cut their energy costs. CFL bulbs last far longer than do incandescent bulbs.

Finally, families can further reduce their utility costs by buying only Energy Star-certified products – which are guaranteed to consume less energy – and by searching out government tax breaks. The federal and state governments both offer tax breaks for homeowners who install solar panels, geothermal heating units, low-flow plumbing fixtures and other green products. It’s up to families, though, to search out and take advantage of these tax breaks.

As a last way to reduce their monthly expenses, families can rely on the Internet. Yes, the Internet is useful for more than just celebrity gossip. Families can find free software online that can do just about anything that more expensive software programs can do. They can also use it to find the lowest-cost insurance policies and the cheapest gasoline in their area. They can browse government sites that provide information on ways to save money on everything from vacations to heating homes. And they can log onto a variety of Web sites to print out coupons that they can then take to their local grocery store.
Saving money doesn’t have to be a chore. And it doesn’t have to change the lifestyles to which families have grown accustomed. Thanks to the Internet and some common sense, families can bring themselves a bit of financial relief every month.
