How Your Problem With Credit Can Affect Your Career?

Many people have problem credit. Consider the hypothetical case of Joe, who was one of three finalists selected for a job with a large company. Management had received thousands of applications. After they reviewed the credit reports and history of the finalists for the job, they decided to go ahead with another candidate even though Joe was the most suitable candidate for that job.

Joe's credit problem was a big hindrance in his chances of getting a dream job. There are other such situations in this world that you need to face if you have a problem with credit. The reason Joe didn't get the job was that management interpreted his inability to handle finances well as a personal weakness. This is the impression that most people get when they find out about someone with bad credit or problem credit.

This example can give you an idea of what goes inside the mind of the lenders when they are approached for a loan by people who have problem credit. You know you have a problem with credit when you are unable to make payments on credit cards, a lender has sued you for not making regular payments, you declared bankruptcy in the past, or there is a tax lien on your home.

Factors such as these give the impression to prospective lenders and employers that you cannot be trusted as an individual or with your finances. Having a problem with credit can land you in grave financial trouble. As far as employment is concerned, there is no proven fact that says that having a problem with credit affects your work performance or efficiency in any case.

It is just a matter of perception. Take the example of Gloria, who filed for bankruptcy in 1994. Today she works as a successful entrepreneur. There are many other such success stories of people who had a problem with credit and still made it to the top.

There are both good and bad sides to problem credit. Many people make the mistake of filing for bankruptcy if they are unable to meet expenses or make credit card payments due to unemployment. There is one thing that you should always remember: you can't undo the bankruptcy you filed for. Bankruptcy stays on your credit report for more than 10 years. In such a case, if you find a good job that suits you, there are chances that you might get turned down if they hear about your bankruptcy.

According to a survey, it was found that employers always make it a point to check their potential employees' credit. The reports submitted for job applicants do not necessarily show the age or marital status; the most important thing they include are applicants' credit scores.

There are a lot of chances that credit reports contain errors. It is even possible that the report might include bankruptcy without your knowledge. This error can occur if there is someone who has a similar name. Your prospective employers will think that you have a problem with credit.

Make sure that you get your report in hand before applying for a job so that if there are any errors in your credit report, they are sorted out beforehand. Once the errors are rectified, you can easily get rid of your problem credit.
