Most of you have seen those ads with the band that plays catchy songs about how if they would only have checked their free credit report, they would not keep getting stuck in less than perfect situations because they would have known that their credit scores had gone downhill. The songs are catchy--you probably find yourself humming them once in a while--but do you take their message to heart? Do you know where to get your free credit report? When was the last time you thought about your credit score or checked to make sure that your credit history is accurate?
Getting free credit reports is not at all difficult. Believe it or not, the credit reporting agencies allow each citizen one free credit report every year, just to help you make sure that your credit score and credit history have not gone awry. All you have to do is ask for it and your credit score (and credit report) can be delivered right to your e-mail inbox. But where do you ask for this report? Who do you contact to help you get your hands on all of your credit reports each year?
The easiest way to make sure that you get your annual free credit reports is to contact each one of the three major credit reporting agencies: Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian. Each of these major credit reporting agencies is set up on the internet and all you have to do is visit their websites and fill out a quick form to request a copy of your credit report. Your first credit report of the year (which is any twelve month period) is free. Any other credit reports you request over the next twelve months will be billed at a nominal fee.
There are also many companies that offer to help streamline the credit reporting and credit monitoring processes for you. These are often membership sites that require a monthly fee to help you track your credit scores. For one small fee, you can have each new change to your credit scores delivered right to your inbox. Of course, like with the major credit reporting agencies, these companies only allow one free credit report per year. Checking your credit each year is not hard--all you have to do is ask--all of the information you need can be delivered directly to your inbox!
