Debt Consolidation Scams

People are increasingly turning to professional debt consolidation services to help them to come out from their debt traps. Being in debt seems to have taken on epidemic proportions in America, where more than 80 percent of people seem to have been afflicted with this malaise. It is no wonder therefore, that debt assistant and debt consolidation programs are mushrooming all over the place. However, there is a word of caution for these people. They must be very careful in choosing the right debt consolidation company from amongst the plethora of different debt consolidation programs that are available. Scams are very real when it comes to debt consolidation.

Most credit repair and debt consolidation companies are Internet based. They are very informative and try to explain in depth how they can help you. You should know exactly what you are looking for and not get allured by whatever they say. There may be many illegitimate credit repair and debt consolidation companies whose only aim is to deprive you of your hard earned money. You have to tread very carefully to avoid the pitfalls of these illegitimate organizations.

Keep your eyes open
Be aware that in America and Canada, it is illegal for lenders to ask for payment in advance to secure a loan. So, if a debt consolidation company asks for funds in advance to secure your loan approval, the warning light must flash in your mind's eye immediately. It might be a coincidence, but if you send the approval fee, chances are you will be declined the loan.

Second, if a debt consolidation company claims that it can get all your negative markings on the credit report cleared but it wants you to apply for your credit report and send a copy to them, you should possibly give it a second thought. Most debt consolidation companies require extensive fees in the range of $800 or $900 and also ask for $200 deposit to secure your entrance into their debt consolidation program and if they claim that they can clear all negative information from your credit report, guaranteed, you should investigate them fully before having anything to do with them.

According to the Credit Repair Organizations Act, debt consolidation companies can't require you to pay until they have completed the promised services. If they ask you to pay money to perform a debt consolidation service, other than a percentage based on your debt, you should avoid them.

Many debt consolidation companies might ask you to do illegal things such as asking you not to contact a credit bureau, not counseling you on what debt consolidation services they offer that you can do on your own, asking you to create a new identity for yourself and suggesting to you to create a new credit identity as you are too far in debt to ever climb out. Be aware that you should never be told that there is no way out of your debt situation. You should be extra careful regarding the above illegal actions because if you do anything like that you will be committing fraud and you will face prosecution instead of the debt consolidation company.

Many companies might offer you a second mortgage or a home equity line of credit. Although these are not scams, these are dangerous ways of eliminating debt if you are not careful. Debt consolidation loans might be a great way to consolidate your loans but you have to put up your house as collateral and if you do not control your spending sprees and go on increasing your debts, you might as well bid adieu to your house.

If you are facing hard financial times, you're more likely to fall prey to debt consolidation scams. You must remember that it is not easy to eliminate debt and if some debt consolidation company's offer sounds too good to be true, avoid it.
