Credit repair can be a difficult thing to understand. With all of the different types of repair companies out there and so many diverse services available, it can be hard to find real credit help. Some consumers can spend a lot of time just trying to find the right credit management company to give them competent credit help and people to show them all the credit counseling aspects.
Whether a consumer wants to remove a simple accounting mistake or has a problem with a massive amount of negative entries resulting from a divorce or identity theft, there are smart people out there that can provide credit help. However, there are several things that the consumer can do for themselves at a very low cost.
The first thing all consumers need to do for any type of credit repair, is get their credit report. All consumers are entitled to a free credit report once a year; all they have to do is request one from the credit reporting agencies. The easiest way to find out how do this is to go to the Federal Trade Commission website. They have all the information consumers need to request a free annual credit report.
With the credit report in hand, the consumer can start identifying what entries the consumer needs to find credit repair solutions for. If there are any entries that the consumer feels are inaccurate, they can dispute it.
Here is the time consuming part of the credit repair process. Each and every inaccurate entry requires a separate attempt to resolve. This means that if there are dozens of inaccurate entries, all of them need to be addressed separately.
Consumers with a single inaccurate entry can usually fix it themselves; they just have to type up a letter detailing why they believe that the entry is wrong and request that it be removed. They then send a copy of the letter with a copy of their report to the credit reporting agency and when the agency receives it, they are required to start an investigation.
During the investigation process the consumer will just have to wait to find out if their credit repair attempt worked. If it does not work the first time, the consumer has to resend another letter. This can go on for months, until the consumer either gives up or gets resolution.
This is why most consumers just go to one of the credit repair services available and lets them handle it, especially if they have dozens of inaccurate entries to contend with. It can sometimes take months of sending letters to get the desired result.
Before a consumer attempts to resolve a credit repair issue themselves, they should at least talk to a credit repair professional about what they can do and how much it’ll cost. There are some good ones out there; you just have to do a bit of research.
