What Are Your Future Plans?
For far too many, when we think about personal finances, the only thought is getting through to the next day, week or paycheck. For some lucky and smart ones (sadly, today it seems to be a combination of both) that problem is not faced, and it’s more a matter of looking to the future. Even so, it is still vital to be aware of what condition your personal finances are in.
If you have managed to have a sufficiently diversified portfolio to have weathered the current storm with most of your retirement intact, the question that arises now is what you intend or want to do with that money and is it allocated in such a way as to make that happen? It is never too late to find a way to increase your return on your investments.
So, what do you want to do with your investments?
Are you planning a simple and quiet retirement or do you see yourself finally taking that trip to Iceland you’ve always wanted? Do you want one big trip or would you like to go every year?
Or, are you looking to take an early retirement offer and start your own business or get a degree you don’t need but have always wanted? If you have managed your finances sufficiently well, there is no reason your life after your standard career period can’t open up a whole new world. However, while there is no need to be tied unwaveringly to a plan no matter what comes, it is important to plan ahead.
This means you want to look at the balance in your portfolio. Is the balance of stocks, CDs, mutual funds, bonds and savings accounts appropriate to your future goals? As much as we all hate to think about it, do you have funds set aside or a plan if there is some catastrophic medical event?
That being said… What kind of insurance do you and yours have? (You might also want to make sure the beneficiary is the person you want it to be, surprisingly often people remember to get the lawn furniture back, but not to change the insurance.)
While this all seems intensely complicated and a little morbid, having it dealt with is one of the best things you can do for yourself and for those around you. At any point in life having your finances and other papers in order is ideal. It’s a goal that is rarely met, but it’s a goal nonetheless.
