Online Credit Report and Tips
If you have no idea what a credit report looks like and what the importance of a credit report is, then it is recommended that you get one and take a look at it. In simple terms, a credit report is a detailed report about your financial behavior in the last few years. It includes details about any major financial transaction that you may have indulged in like the purchase of a home, any loans that you may have availed off, all bank accounts, payment details etc. There are three major credit bureaus which provide your
online credit report. They are TransUnion, Equifax and Experian.
The FRCA
The fair credit reporting act which was enacted in 1971 gives all citizens a right to view their credit report from all major organizations at least once in a year free of cost. This act is designed with the consumer in mind. A consumer can now review all the details in the credit report and challenge its accuracy. If a consumer feels that any part or information in the credit report is false or misleading, then he can apply for it to be reinvestigated or reviewed.
The act was further amended in 1997 and it made it a law violation if anyone obtained a copy of someone's credit report without prior permission. Consumers can also opt to be emitted from any sort of telemarketing based on the list obtained from credit agencies.
An Online Credit Report and It's Advantages
Now, thanks to the internet and technology, if you have access to a computer and the internet, you can easily gain access to your credit report. The service may be charged or free of cost depending on the website that is providing the service. The major credit agencies charge a nominal annual fee of $30 to provide the service. An
online credit report has many advantages. Now you can access the service and review your report from the comfort of your living room. You no longer have to wait for days and do a lot of writing before you receive a copy of the credit report.
Downsides
Thanks to the popularity of the service, now there are many scams as well. There are many websites out there who just want to make a quick buck. These guys take down your credit card details on the pretext of signing you up and very soon, you will notice charges that you never made on your card. It is best to stay away from such sites. Some small credit bureaus also have shady looking sites that offer minimal security and there are many chances that your credit scores as well as your credit card information may be hacked into. So stay away from such shady looking sites as well. It is always better if you sign up for a service from the leading credit bureaus as they are trustworthy and charge a nominal fee rather than opting for a free looking deal that will make you pay much more later on.
