Living Without Credit Cards Can Be Difficult

Now that the purchasing public moved more toward using credit cards for most of their shopping, it has been more difficult to use checks in most locations. With places like restaurants and even little mom and pop shops refusing to take checks, most people only write checks for bills they mail off. Even using cash can be difficult today.

With the Internet helping consumers pay their bills online, checks will quickly be obsolete in the next few years. I don’t even use checks anymore, and most consumers reading this have probably stopped using checks as well. It is becoming increasingly problematic for consumers who do not have access to credit cards.

Credit cards are just like any other type of financing tool. Consumers need to shop around and find the best options, terms, and services available to them. It can be very easy for consumers to just fill out one of the many applications for credit cards they get in the mail, but is that really the best available option?

To entice consumers, many credit cards offer reward programs that give cash back for purchases or free airline miles. These programs can be great for the consumer on the go, but are not the best option for people that carry large balances on the credit cards.

Consumers that carry large balances on their credit cards might consider a little trick to help pay down their credit cards. Quite a few different credit cards offer 0% interest on the balance transfers for several months. If you have good enough credit to be able to get one of these types of credit cards, you can use the 0% interest to help eliminate your credit card debt. Simply transfer the balance of a higher interest card to one of these 0% credit cards, but pay at least the amount of the previous minimum payment.

Consumers that get frequent flyer credit cards need to be sure to read all the terms regarding use of the miles. Many frequent flyer credit cards have stipulations on when you can use the miles and many have short expiration dates on collected miles.

Paying your bills on time is the most important thing for consumers to remember if they rely on their credit cards. Most credit cards will jack up a consumer’s interest rate as soon as they make one late payment, even if the payment is just one day late. In a lot of cases the interest rate can jump to 20% or more, which can really put a damper on anyone’s budget.

Even with the Federal Reserve keeping the prime interest rate at a historic low, interest rate on credit cards remain high. Consumers are encouraged to shop around and don’t just apply for any of the offers for credit cards that come in the mail. The best for you is out there, you just have to look for what solutions best serve you.
