Credit Cards Can Help Fix Bad Credit

I have bad credit, so when I realized I could use credit cards to fix my credit, I started to look for various types of credit cards that could help me build positive credit. Some of the options available to people with bad credit include secured and unsecured credit cards.

Unsecured credit cards are generally the types of credit cards most people are familiar with. When someone gets approved for unsecured credit cards, it means that the financial institution trusts you to make the payments on time, and that you will not default on the card.

Credit cards in the unsecured categories for people with bad credit typically charge hefty fees to even get the cards. These credit cards usually have fees for just having one. In most cases the credit cards will have most if not all of these fees: an account set-up fee, a program fee, an annual fee, a monthly servicing fee, and an additional card fee. Some of these fees can be as much a hundred dollars, just to get the card. All total, some people that applied for these types of credit cards ended up with a first month bill around $200.00 and they had not even used the credit cards to buy anything.

Secured credit cards are for people that want credit cards to report to the credit agencies, but can’t qualify or want to try to avoid all of the upfront fees that most unsecured credit cards carry. Unfortunately, many secured credit cards also charge pretty pricy processing fees.

The best advantage to getting secured credit cards is that the financial institution never checks the credit score of the person applying for the card. But the interest rates are typically the same as most unsecured credit cards. Another advantage to secured credit cards is that most of them do give you a small percentage of interest on the deposit that is securing the card.

For consumers that can’t qualify for unsecured credit cards and don’t have a desire to deposit money into an account to secure one, have an option to obtain prepaid credit cards. Prepaid credit cards are good for two things. They’re a good way to have access to your money and you don’t have to pay an annual percentage rate on a balance. The downside to prepaid credit cards is that they don’t help people build credit, because there is no credit reporting with these types of credit cards.

Prepaid credit cards are really good for gift giving, because they act just like most store gift cards.

It might take some serious research to find credit cards with reward programs and other preferred services, but they are out there.

People wanting to build their credit up should try to get unsecured credit cards first, and if they can’t get qualified they should look into getting secured credit cards. Credit cards are one of many solutions to fixing bad credit.
