Great Deals in a Tough Economy
One of the positive consequences of a falling economy is that there are usually good deals to be found for those with the money to take advantage of them. Companies desperate to keep revenue coming in and inventory moving out are willing to drop their prices, even if it means smaller profit margins on those items. There are several items that can be had at bargain prices right now, and those prices are likely to increase as conditions improve and consumers start spending money again. Here are a few areas where you can find great deals:
Cars: The automakers are all in trouble after several months of lackluster sales. With GM seemingly on the brink of bankruptcy and other automakers operating at a loss, car buyers can negotiate from a very strong position. Most dealerships are offering zero percent financing, huge cash rebates, and other attractive incentives to lure buyers. Used car prices have also fallen 10% in the past year, so they car you buy doesn’t have to be new.
Electronics: Prices have fallen for electronics during this recession, so now could be a great time to upgrade your tech gadgets before prices increase. Laptop computers have seen demand stay strong, but computer prices are still down about 13% in the past year. Prices for televisions are down about 9% from a year ago, with more companies entering the high end TV market.
Vacations: Tourist destinations are desperate for visitors, and that desperation is evident in vacation-related prices. You can get a room in Las Vegas for 34% less than you could in early 2008. Great deals can also be found on cruises, and airlines are fighting for customers with some of the most aggressive ticket prices we’ve seen in years.
Stocks: Perhaps not as exciting as the above categories, there are great bargains for long term stock buyers, with prices still over 40% lower than they were in late 2007 for major stocks. This is a great time to “buy low” and make an attractive long term return on your investment.
