Although online dating may be popular, people need to be careful about identity theft.Though many may look for love on the internet, they should keep in mind that some people may be looking to steal more than their hearts.

A recent report from the Philadelphia Inquirer noted that an Indian national has admitted to stealing the identity of three women he met through online dating websites. Jaitass Dhanoa, 33, used the information gained through the identity theft to open credit card accounts in the women’s name, which he used to charge tens of thousands of dollars.

The paper, which based its report on court documents, noted that Dhanoa found his victims on sites like www.match.com and www.indiandating.com.

"In some cases, the court documents say, Dhanoa moved in with his victims," the Inquirer said. "But each time, the relationship ended when the victim discovered multiple credit card accounts opened in her name, with Dhanoa as an authorized user."

Along with dating and social networking sites, experts advise consumers that they act with caution when it comes to the type of information they share. Consumers are encouraged to keep information like their Social Security number or bank account information secret.
