Bad Credit Repair: Take Steps That Make Your Credit Healthier

Tens of thousands of Americans have bad credit and are in need of bad credit repair. In fact, bad credit seems to have become a national "disease" And, like all diseases, it has a cure: bad credit repair. Bad credit repair can take some time, but in the end, a complete cure is possible.

The first thing you need to do is to find out what is in your credit report. For under $10, you can get your credit report from one of the three main credit-reporting companies and check it to see how bad the situation is. But, if you've recently been denied credit, you can get a free report from the same credit bureau the lender used, as long as you make the request within 30 days. And you don't need a bad credit repair clinic to help you out.

This is because there is no legal way to "repair" your credit. Those that claim to know loopholes and shortcuts are merely after your money. They may even get you into legal trouble, by having you lie about the facts or by creating a whole new file for you. Anything legal that a clinic can do, you can do just as easily and without the expense of "professional" help.

If you find that your credit score isn't that good, there are several steps that you can take to make sure that the situation doesn't worsen further. The first step is to stop using your credit cards. You can retain one for emergency purposes, but surrender the others, throw them into a lake. But, keep at least one account open so that you won't have to worry about applying for a new one in the future. Because with poor credit, you may find it more difficult to get a credit card. So, if you're serious about bad credit repair, first change your spending habits.

However, if your debt situation is not bad, then your low credit score could be a result of errors in you credit report. Believe it or not, up to 40% of all credit reports have errors in them. And, this is where bad credit repair comes in handy. But, to initiate bad credit repair, you need to find all the errors in your credit report. If you find errors, write to the credit bureaus, with all the details, via certified mail, so that you can keep track of the correspondence.

If there are no changes, as a result of the bad credit repair process initiated, you can ask the credit bureau to send a corrected report to anyone who had requested the report in the last 6 months. Also, by law, you're allowed to add information to your report that you believe will help your rating. This might be additional information about a repayment of a loan, good credit you have with companies that do not report to the credit bureau, or salary increases.

But, if the problem is with paying your bills on time, you have options like finding a second job and getting credit counseling. Filing for bankruptcy should always be your last-resort option. As long as you have a plan and stick to it, you can drag yourself out of the financial mess that you've landed in. Paying your bills on time is the best way to get ahead on the road to bad credit repair.

Another option for bad credit repair is to talk to your creditors and work out a settlement or easier payment plan. Your creditors don't want you to default, so most of them will work with you to get a reduced payment schedule. And, if you can keep creditors from reporting you to the credit bureau, you'll spare some damage to your credit score. The catch is that you must stick to the new negotiated plan, because if you fail to comply with the new terms, your creditors will not renegotiate with you.

Over the years, negative items will be dropped from your credit report. Usually in 7 years time, you can be free of all negative information, as long as you don't incur any new debts that you can't repay.
