A Credit Repair Dispute Letter: The Fine Line between Insisting and Begging

Writing a credit repair dispute letter is no easy task. The consumer who should try to get it corrected as soon as possible should dispute any error discovered on a credit report. It is but natural for anyone to flare up when such an error is noticed and the first reaction would be to pick up the phone, call the creditor and let off the steam building within you. You would most likely blow your head off and probably regret later. However, you should adopt the more mature way of handling this situation and lay off all verbal weapons and sit down quietly and write a well thought out and specific credit repair dispute letter.

While writing this letter, you should keep in mind a few important things. First, be honest and reasonable in your approach, as the credit card companies are quite accustomed to people trying to wriggle out of their obligations. You must make a list of the errors and also explain why you think that the information is wrong. You should also enumerate the course of action that you would like the company to take to rectify the errors.

For example: If a late payment to an account is shown on the credit report and you know that you have been making all the payments on time, you can ask for the details of the payment that has been shown to be late. You have to show patience and when you receive the information, you can find the relevant banking information to show that the payment was indeed made on time. A cleared check or a receipt from an on-line payment would serve as enough proof. Hence, instead of getting angry with the creditor, it is recommended that one should exercise patience and write credit repair dispute letters to all the credit reporting agencies.

It is also important to send photocopies of the proof of payment with the relevant information highlighted and not the original in the first place. You should then follow up with the credit card company if no action is taken by them in a reasonable amount of time. Normally credit card companies will take action as they do not want to lose their customers. Moreover, you can write the credit repair dispute letter on your own without the help of a credit repair company.

You must first obtain your credit reports from each of the three credit bureaus, study them and make notes of the entries that you feel are inaccurate or shouldn't be there at all as well as any accounts that have been inactive for more than 7 years. You should then write separate credit repair dispute letters to each of the three credit bureaus. You should explain each item that you think is inaccurate by listing the name of the item, the amount of the item, the collection agency, why it is incorrect, and what you want done about it (corrected or removed). If you find the same inaccuracy on more than one credit bureau's report you have to contact each bureau separately about it. You must include your name, Social Security Number, full address, a copy of your drivers license, a copy of the corresponding credit report, and any proof you have that the disputed items are incorrect in each credit repair dispute letter, which should be sent via certified or registered mail.

If the credit repair dispute letter produces no result, you have to move up the ladder and contact people at a higher level. Most important, you must have copies of all your correspondence to prove unhelpful behavior. There are very good chances that the senior people will take quicker action and resolve your dispute. However, you must remain honest, fair and polite and you will find that your disputes will be resolved in a timely and appropriate manner.

If you find any negative entry in your credit report, write a credit repair dispute letter immediately to remove the inaccuracy from your report.
